The "Ant Hill"

Also known as the Fill Slope, or....on the trail map, the beginning of Russ's Street

Clicking on the photos enlarges them.  Photos are taken as you come down the hill.  They have been taken over several years, so conditions shown will vary depending on what was happening the day the particular photo was taken.  Photos looking back up the hill will be described as such.

Overview

  • Rated:
  • Type of trail:  Short intermediate access trail.  Can be scary on a holiday weekend when there is poor light (see below).  The trail develops moguls throughout the day and the bottom has some strange pitch anomalies.
  • Although this area shows on the map as a "slow skiing zone", don't assume anyone is obeying that directive.  They aren't.
  • Either immediately to the left of Chair 7 or off to the right just past the Summit House coming off Chair One.  The ant hill is the main access point to most of the back side, East Rim and the North Bowl area.  It is also a prime "photo opportunity" with its views of the Swan Range, Glacier National Park, etc.
  • There are TWO areas on the map designated as "Easiest Way Down" from the Summit.  This is the beginning of one of them.  The Russ's Street route is green for most of the way and the section which is blue is not very crowded.  However, this route is NOT FOR BEGINNING SKIERS.  Go over to the Easy Rider, Chair Six, or Chair Three areas for that.

View from the top of the Ant Hill:

At the bottom the trail on the left is Whitetail, the slight left is Russ's Street (and access to Caribou and Goat Haunt).  On the right can be seen the track along the ridgeline of East Rim

Bumps building as the day goes on:

Holiday traffic:

Looking up from Whitetail:

This shows a cut coming off the Ant Hill just before Whitetail that leads into Whitetail with a much steeper pitch.  Although groomed in this picture it rarely is in fact.

Seen from Russ's Street:

Seen from Moe-Mentum:

Directly in front is North Bowl Face.  The Ant Hill is the groomed run on the right.
