Evan's Heaven

Clicking on the photos enlarges them.  Photos are taken as you come down the hill.  They have been taken over several years, so conditions shown will vary depending on what was happening the day the particular photo was taken.  Photos looking back up the hill will be described as such.

Overview

  • Rated:
  • Type of trail:  steep, treed area.  Some cliffs.  Usually they are quite visible unless it is snowing or foggy.  Ski carefully until you know where they are.
  • There are two approaches to Evan's Heaven.  The first doesn't really require the foresight that the second does.  The second entrance requires you to straightline the Russ's Street pitch after the Goat Haunt intersection, past Moose, to keep your speed up for a long flat section along the top part of Russ's Street.  The first entrance (called the Back Door) gives you more length of slope, but the initial trees are much tighter, last longer, and you come in ABOVE some cliffs (Buckle Your Boots) that most would want to avoid.  The bottom of this area empties back onto Russ's Street.
  • If you ski the less tracked areas look out for tree wells.

Views of Evan's Heaven from the East Rim:

See the trees and cliffs in the nearer area which you would get coming in the first (unmarked) entrance.  The second, marked, entrance provides the more open treed area beyond the cliffs:

View of trail approaching first entrance (aka Back Door):

View of trail approaching second entrance:

You can enter either just to the right of the sign, or, to avoid some whoop-de-doos, just past the sign there is another clearing:

View coming in second entrance:

Looking back at the above from where it opens up.  Blue skier is coming in by the marked entrance, which has whoopdedoos.  Red skier came in the easier opening just behind where they are in the picture:

Just through the entrance, looking out over the valley:

Normally, one would head straight here to take the steeper lines:

However, if one heads down the pitch to skier's left (shown in the next cell), you can escape some of the steepness of the area by selecting a lower line:

Just through the entrance looking down, the view left to right.  This pitch, which is a bit more open, can be bypassed by keeping high to skier's right to find a steeper pitch.  Proceeding down this pitch, if you head to the far left, will bring you into Lee's Way:

Staying more to the right will take you to the less steep sections of Evan's:

Following the little ridge over to the right, coming in somewhat high (you can keep higher):

Looking down:

Looking across (back towards earlier entrance).  More than likely, the earlier entrance would mean you came in on the FAR SIDE of those rocks, somewhat higher up.

Proceeding down that first pitch above and then cutting back in to the right and under some small cliffs: (Not the cliffs seen near the skier in the red jacket above, but another smaller set of cliffs below and skier's left of that one.)

Heading down, but looking up, taken various days:

Look out for tree wells in this area:

The general goal to prolong the journey is to keep heading down and to skier's right, getting closer to Moose before you exit onto Russ's Street.  This is typically the type of trees and pitch:

If you went in the first entrance or headed right (away from Lee's Way) from the second entrance, you'll come out on Russ's, although if you are persistently heading right, you may reach Moose:

Skier's right will take you to the less steep portions of Evan's Heaven
