Space

(May have other "local" names as well.  Named for the rock area about a third of the way down, where you leap into space.)

Clicking on the photos enlarges them.  Photos are taken as you come down the hill.  They have been taken over several years, so conditions shown will vary depending on what was happening the day the particular photo was taken.  Photos looking back up the hill will be described as such.

Overview

  • Rated:  not rated, but definitely and terrain
  • Type of trail:  Steep treed area beyond Schmidt's Chute along the Inspiration ridge.  The section on skier's left is tighter trees and cliffs.  The area more to skier's right is similar to Elephant's Graveyard in pitch and tree spacing on skier's right.  Entry often involves a short cornice jump into the looser-treed area.
  • The snow on this whole face, including Elephant's Graveyard, is normally fantastic due to the prevailing winds sweeping snow from the front-side bowl up and over to this side of the ridge.  For exit, you need to decide how much poling and hiking you want to do, as the route straight down the pitch necessitates some uphill poling if you don't traverse out to the right high enough.  If you want to avoid this poling, keep an eye out for the point at which it seems there are a lot of lateral traverses happening.  You can either exit all the way over onto No Name, or with an uphill push, you can come out via Moe-Mentum.
  • This is sort of a gray area between Elephant's on one side and Schmidt's on the other side.  It depends on whom you ski with what you call it and where you enter.  There is a cliff area if you enter skier's left.
  • Depending on whom you ask, the "Space" is either your air over the cliffs or the fact that some of the trees are tight, therefore there is NO space.

Entry from Inspiration:

Looser treed section (no pics of earlier, tightly treed section along the Inspiration cat track, it would be worth my life to stop there):

Sometimes there is a bit of a leap:

As you can see, more distantly is the tighter treed area prior to exiting the Inspiration cat track.
