Picture Chutes

Clicking on the photos enlarges them.  Photos are taken as you come down the hill.  They have been taken over several years, so conditions shown will vary depending on what was happening the day the particular photo was taken.  Photos looking back up the hill will be described as such.

  • Rated:
  • Type of trail:  Steep, treed area with cliffs.
  • Coming off Chair One, head left towards Hell Fire.  Getting onto Hell Fire requires a bit of a straightline down towards Hell Fire because there is a bit of a hill where Hell Fire crosses the snowmobile track.  (DO NOT ASSUME THAT THESE GUYS WILL STOP!)  As you proceed along Hell Fire, there is a sign for Picture Chutes on your left, past Sling Shot.  Navigate through the trees, watching for the cliffs.
  • Once in the Glory Hole basin, either exit via the traverse (Highway to Heaven) or via Glory Hole to Hell Fire.

Overview of area seen from School Road:

This is a zoom in to just part of it.  I actually took the picture because of the avalanche that can be seen.  I was almost below it when it happened, so you might say it had interest for me.

View approaching trail:

Just beyond the skier, turn left onto the deceptively gentle slope where trees mask the cliff area.

The entry looks pretty benign:
