Glory Hole

Clicking on the photos enlarges them.  Photos are taken as you come down the hill.  They have been taken over several years, so conditions shown will vary depending on what was happening the day the particular photo was taken.  Photos looking back up the hill will be described as such.

  • Rated:
  • Type of trail:  Lightly treed, steep area, emptying into a narrow, more densely treed, gorge for a ways, then there is a large flat basin where Picture Chutes, Sling Shot, and Gray's Golf Course all meet up near the traverse out of the basin called Highway to Heaven.  Glory Hole continues on, through more trees, to meet up at Grand Junction with Hell Fire.  The gorge and beyond are frequently groomed, but there is no need to stay in the groomed sections.
  • Coming off Chair One, head left towards Hell Fire.  Glory Hole requires a bit of a straightline down towards Hell Fire because there is a bit of a hill where Hell Fire crosses the snowmobile track.  (DO NOT ASSUME THAT THESE GUYS WILL STOP!)  Glory Hole is to your immediate left after you cross that bit.  As you proceed along Hell Fire, it becomes Sling Shot.  (Actually, for all I know the first part is Sling Shot as well until you reach the gorge section at the bottom of the steep pitch...)
  • After the initial steep entry, the gorge and all that follows are popular areas for snowboarders and other "terrain park" types to zip in and out of trees, so be aware of who else is in this area with you, especially on weekends and holidays.  This area is groomed on an intermittent basis, but there is plenty of opportunity to make your own route.  You'll find a lot of moguled areas interspersed as well.  I've got my own favorite route that seems to be less skied and in better shape as a result, but it would be hard to explain.
  • If the thought of being in a gorge with 10 teenage boys zipping in and out of trees alarms you, it is possible to cut over across Sling Shot (skier's right) to the apron under Picture Chutes and avoid the gorge area.  The section below the basin is still a natural terrain park, but there's more elbow room.

You can go down any line you like, no need to stay in the cleared area.

Gray's is the slope you can see through the trees.
