Big Timber

Clicking on the photos enlarges them.  Photos are taken as you come down the hill.  They have been taken over several years, so conditions shown will vary depending on what was happening the day the particular photo was taken.  Photos looking back up the hill will be described as such.

Overview

  • Rated:  Not rated, but since it's an unmarked trails with trees and tree wells.
  • Type of trail:  Powder stash in the trees.
  • This is an area of trees in the triangle formed by Ridge Run, its return to the lift, and Outside Road.  To reach it, turn back over skier's left as you get off the chair lift, taking Ridge Run until passing Outside Road.  Enter where you like into the trees after that, descending to the return cat track of Ridge Run.
  • I like to enter a good bit further on, after a gentle dip (which you have to keep your speed up for if you are continuing on Ridge Run.)  Doing that maximizes the time in the trees and allows me to use a leftward angle as I descend, which minimizes the cat track at the bottom.  Entering SOONER, will give you a bit more vertical and steepness, but less of a journey.
  • Depending on where you exit this CAN require a long cat track.  To escape that, angle to the left as you descend.  There are TWO roads as you descend.  Do NOT continue past the second one.  If you are unsure where you are, take any road to the LEFT.
  • This is best skied with a buddy, due to the tree well issue.

The resort boundary rope runs along the skier's right.

Continuing down Ridge Run.  Anywhere off to your left takes you into Big Timber:

Looking back up the section of Ridge Run seen in the above picture.  Big Timber is on your right in this view:

Still on Ridge Run, with Big Timber to your left.  There is a flat "saddle" area that can require some speed early season.  It seems to get better as the snow level increases.  Looking ahead:

Entering Big Timber on a powder day:

Pictures following this are taken following the opening to the left, behind the dead tree.

Descending, on a predominantly leftward track:

This is looking back from where I came:

There is an "upper road" bisecting Big Timber, taking you over to Outside Road:

This picture is taken from Ridge Run and gives you a general idea of the pitch.
